Sometimes a show can be carried by one solitary good character, and sometimes a strong character can push something already solid into great teritory.
Sweetness and Lightning was a cute show, and it definitely earned the first half of its name. But, overall it was just content to be a low key slice of life show with a likeable cast. I’m not sure how well it would have stood out without Tsumugi. Tsumugi is very good.
The show has a few standout episodes but generally it coasts along, but it still ended up being something I’d look forward to each week, a lot of this was down to how well realised Tsumugi is.
This made the episode where Tsumugi ventures out alone into the town one of the series highlights. Shown entirely from her perspective, it does a fantastic job of capturing that sense of adventure that comes from childhood exploration. There’s also an adorable song about sharks, ’nuff said.
