SDF Macross is a great show, but it has a lot of issues. A lot of these tie into the characters, the main cast in particular are pretty bland (Do You Remember Love did a lot to fix this). However, Macross has always done a good job of fleshing out the supporting cast, regularly including random semingly unimportant scenes of minor characters just hanging out. Which goes a long way towards making them feel like real people with lives outside of their interactions with the main characters. Max and Millia stand as a shining example of this. Sometimes a show can be carried by one solitary good character, and sometimes a strong character can push something already solid into great teritory.
Sweetness and Lightning was a cute show, and it definitely earned the first half of its name. But, overall it was just content to be a low key slice of life show with a likeable cast. I’m not sure how well it would have stood out without Tsumugi. Tsumugi is very good.
