Granbelm Episode 3: Reasons to Fight

granbelm9.jpg

This episode was definitely another excuse for some breathing room, taking time to establish a few of the characters outside the main pair a little more. Last week told us why Mangetsu wants to fight, this time we found out why everyone else is getting in on this.

Granbelm episode 2: Magnets, Magic and Questionable Motivations

granbelm6.jpg

Granbelm’s first episode was super flashy but didn’t quite have enough substance to pin down where the show was actually going. Episode two remedied that nicely. Eschewing last week’s cool robots entirely in favour of taking some time to actually establish the concept a bit more beyond occasional shouting in between cool robots blowing things up. I liked this episode a lot more and am now fully on board. Continue reading “Granbelm episode 2: Magnets, Magic and Questionable Motivations”

Granbelm Episode 1: Wow Cool Robot!

granbelm1.jpg

So I guess we’re doing that episodic blogging thing again. Hopefully it works out better this time around. Granbelm is uh, hard to pin down actually. So this could end up being another space fishing level debacle. Or maybe it ‘ll turn out great, only time will tell. Continue reading “Granbelm Episode 1: Wow Cool Robot!”

Endro! Episode 1: Best Short Anime of the Year.

endro3.jpg

You’ve got to admire a show that’s willing to commit so much to a dumb gag.

I was cautiously optimistic about Endro ahead of this season, it managed to shatter those expectations entirely. I’ve always been fond of cutesy shows like this but in recent years they’ve kind of left me a little cold, so I didn’t want to get too excited for what might end up being just OK again. Luckily it’s great.

Between the Sky and Sea Episode 12: Space Fishing I guess.

soraumi70.jpg

I’d originally planned to get this post up sooner, but have been delaying it for a couple of reasons. The more obvious one being time, between the 12 Days posts and Christmas/New Year I’ve just not had the time to get around to writing this one. The more significant reason though is that I’m honestly struggling to come up with anything to actually say about this episode. As a finale to 11 episodes of dithering around in circles it was honestly pretty functional. But functional isn’t great when I have zero investment in any of the characters. Between the Sky and Sea episode 11: Arbitrarily not telling people things

soraumi56.jpg

The episode opens with Maki visiting her father in Tokyo about Maiko’s missing brother. Weirdly enough she questions him as if he were dead, even though Haru would presumably have told everyone that he was actually alive after last episode. She did tell everyone… Right? Oh dear. Between the Sky and Sea episode 10: Apparently there’s a villain now?

soraumi54.jpg
This is exactly how I feel 10 weeks into writing about this.

This show has some tone issues. Tone issues which were pretty constant this episode in particular, with scenes which were very clearly meant to be taken totally seriously consistently coming across as comedic due to the goofy delivery or inherent silliness of the situation at hand. At least it was unintentionally funny.

Between the Sky and Sea episode 9: Mehstival.

Harsh

This episode felt like it was meant to be one of the emotional high points of the series. It very much wasn’t. Continue reading “Between the Sky and Sea episode 9: Mehstival.”

Between the Sky and Sea episode 8: Crashing back down.

soraumi42.jpg

After the lukewarm excitement of last week’s space escapades things came tumbling back down to earth again this week. With the show having fulfilled its vague space fishing quota for a while we’re back to the individual character focus episodes again. This time it’s… Oh no.
