12 Days 2020, Day 6: Short Awards 2020

As is now something of a tradition for my 12 days posts, day 6 is our 5th annual Short awards. Every year I use this day to highlight some of the more interesting short anime that aired over the course of the year. In any year the quality of short anime tends to vary wildly and that held true here for the most part. On the plus side there wasn’t much in the way of actively unpleasant stuff like some previous years have had so good job on that front 2020. Anyways, lets get into it shall we.

12 Days 2019, Day 6: Short Awards 2019

Well this is the third year in a row I’ve done this so I guess it counts as a tradition now (technically it’s the fourth but I hadn’t quite pinned down the format at that point so lets just ignore year one).  I watch a lot of short anime, I sort of make a point of trying to watch as many as possible, because I think they’re often unfairly looked down on because of their length and the perceived lack of effort that entails. There are some absolute gems floating around outside the bounds of the standard run time though, and each year I like to use one of these 12 days posts to highlight a few of the more interesting offerings each year. Winter 2019 Shorts Roundup

ueno26.jpg

And here we are again, it feels like it’s only been a few weeks since I last wrote one of th… oh right. But hey, this one’s actually appearing in a timely manner for once, so that’s nice. This season was relatively sparse on the whole, with only four of the seven airing shorts licensed In terms of quality I mostly found myself with extremely mixed feelings on arguably the season’s flagship short, which was a little disappointing. But enough preamble, let’s get to the rundown. Continue reading “Winter 2019 Shorts Roundup”

Fall 2018 Shorts Roundup

Well it sure has been a while. Between real life getting in the way and a sort of collapse of my desire to write after I couldn’t keep up with the weekly Endro! posts (Obviously those are no longer happening, but I do have a post about a specific character in the works which may or may not see the light of day at some point). I’ve been sitting with this half finished for a couple of months now. But it’s still technically the winter season so I’m not late with this yet! Fall was an unusually solid season for shorts, although I went in with unrealistically high expectations for one specific show the generally solid performance of everything else helped to cushion the blow of its being merely good.

12 Days of Anime 2018, Day 11: Atarashi! – Exploring the gdgdverse

tesagure7.jpg

Over the years short anime have kind of become my thing. I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for them but it’s only in the last few years that I’ve switched to “watch nearly every short every season” mode. Because of that there are naturally some gaps through which shows which are extremely my sort of thing have slipped. This year I filled one of those gaps. Despite Straight Title Robot Anime; one of my favourite series ever being a part of it I had previously missed out on the rest of the gdgd series.

Summer 2018 Shorts Roundup

yama178.jpgWell that season sure flew by. It certainly doesn’t feel like I’ve gone another 3 months without writing anything.

This season’s shorts had one unusual thing in common. With a single exception everything was a sequel or a continuation. As such it’s a lot of “if you liked this already it’s still good” for the most part. But enough preamble. In the spirit of the swiftly passing season let’s get right down to it. I swear I start every one of these lamenting my seeming inability to write more often, maybe I’ll actually do something about that some day.

Well that certainly was a season of shorts. As is so often the case I feel like last season’s batch can best be described as hit or miss. Some of them were really great, and some fell flat for me at least. With that said let’s just dive right into the roundup. Continue reading “Spring 2018 Shorts Roundup”

This is actually being written in a somewhat timely manner for once? Wonders never cease.

Sadly this season was pretty thin on the ground in the shorts sphere, there weren’t that many to start with, and only four actually got picked up for streaming. But on the plus side they were fairly consistently decent, and in some cases pretty great, so it could be far worse. Continue reading “Winter 2018 Shorts Roundup”
